Webmanager's Picture Page

Pictures from a digital camera or scanner can be very "big". If they are too big, they take a long time to upload to Jane's website, they take a long time to process once they get there, they could take a long time to send to you, and eventually they could take up too much room on her computer.

So it would be much better if you could send "small" pictures.

If you look at the amount of memory the picture is using, pictures from a camera or scanner could be as large as 2 Mb, which is the same as 2000 Kb. The pictures you see on this website are about 25-60 Kb. If you want to send a 100 Kb picture, that's no trouble, and up to 200 KB is okay though a waste of space.

Size can also be measured by the height and width in pixels. Roughly, if you send a big picture, it will just get shrunk to fit the computer screen -- anything bigger than 550 x 300 pixels will be shrunk.

You probably have a program for editing pictures that came with your digital camera or scanner. What you want to do is first "crop" your picture. Than means to cut off the part of the edges that doesn't contain any part of the picture you want.

Next, there should be an option to change the "size" of your image. If you change the height, the width should automatically change so that the shape of the picture doesn't change. Vice versa for width. So change one of these. If your picture will appear by itself on your computer screen, a width of 500 pixels is fine, but if it will be with another picture, you probably need to compress the width to 300 pixels. Your picture will be resized if the height is more than 550 pixels, so there is no point in having a height larger than that.

Finally, when you save your picture after editing it, you want to save it in jpeg format. That is probably what your program will do anyway. If there are options for how good the picture should be, you probably want the second highest option. Roughly, you don't want to save at low quality and have a bad picture. But there is no point in saving at the highest quality if you can't see the difference between highest quality and the second highest quality.

If you do not have a program to edit pictures, they are fairly easy to get. Irfanview is free and fairly easy to learn to use.

On the upload page, you usually want to choose the "browse" option. Then you just have to find your pictures on your computer.
